Joseph W. McCartin was born and raised in the Hamden section of Baltimore City and graduated from City College High School in 1952. Following graduation, he spent the next four years as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.  After his service commitment, Joe spent one year in the work force before taking advantage of the GI bill, enrolling in the business program at the University of Maryland in 1957.  Among many collegiate activities, Joe served as president of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Neumann Club. He was listed in 'Who’s Who of Americas Colleges & Universities' his senior year.   

  After graduating from Maryland in 1961 with a BA degree in Business Administration, Joe accepted a position in the sales training program at Armstrong Cork Co. in Lancaster, Pa. He spent two years as a sales 'rep' for Armstrong before being hired as an administrative assistant to the Director of the Physical Plant at the Univ. of Md.  While employed at the University, Joe earned 30 credits in law school but withdrew to return to sales.

  Joe left the Univ of Md. following his appointment as a new agent with the  Erie Insurance Group - and in 1967 founded the Joseph W. McCartin Insurance Agency. His rapidly growing agency soon included Harford Mutual, Safeco and TransAmerica Life Companies, which they still represent today. In 1973, Joe earned his Series 7 securities license and, a few years later, his Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) designation. This made him somewhat of a pioneer among property & casualty agents as the agency expanded to include life insurance and retirement planning.

 Over the years, assisted by his loyal and dedicated staff, Joe built a successful independent financial services company. In 1998, after 31 years, he proudly sold the business to his three sons, Mike, Doug & Steve. Today, Joe and Steve manage financial & retirement planning at JWM, Inc. Their common sense, long-term approach to investing has served clients well over many years.        

 Joe is past president of the Beltsville Rotary Club and the Silver Spring Civitan Club. He has been a loyal supporter of the University of Md. and Maryland athletics and is a 30+ year member of the Terrapin Club. He has been a parishioner of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church since moving to Silver Spring nearly 4o years ago. He and his wife Audrey, who were married in 1960, enjoy traveling, time at their Bethany Beach cottage - and especially their eight grandchildren.  

Steve graduated from St Francis University in 1985 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity and served as treasurer for Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) his senior year.

Upon graduation, he worked five years as a staff accountant in the real estate and telecommunications industries before joining the family business in 1991. He earned his property, casualty, life & health licenses and today splits time managing the day-to-day operations of the business with service & sales. Steve holds a Series 7 securities license and together, with his father and company founder, Joseph, provides investment & retirement planning at J.W. McCartin Insurance, Inc.

Steve lives in Silver Spring, Md. with his wife and two daughters. He volunteers as Director of the Silver Spring Saints youth football program. Steve's hobbies include golf, reading and trips to their Mountaintop, Pa. cabin.

Doug Graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Md. in 1984  before  joining his brother Mike in the landscape design business. In 1993, Doug began his career at J.W. McCartin, obtaining his property, casualty, life and health insurance licenses. He learned the business from the ground floor and offers  12 years of experience in customer service, personal lines & commercial sales to his many clients. He is also trained to assist & guide our clients through the maze of life and health insurance products available in todays marketplace.

Doug is a member of the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County and longtime Rotarian in the Beltsville Rotary Club. He volunteers many hours at St. Bernadette’s  Catholic Church.

Along with his Wife and 4 children, Douglas lives in the Four Corners section of Silver Spring and enjoys home improvement projects, crabbing and time at the beach with his family.

Daniel is a 1981 graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Md. After earning a degree from the The Culinary Institute of America in 1986, Dan served for 10 years as head chef at the family business, Fred & Harry’s Seafood Restaurant in Silver Spring, Md.

In 1995, Dan yearned for a new challenge and began working part time at J.W. McCartin Insurance in customer support within the personal lines division. In 1996 he made a career move and joined the firm fulltime. By that time he had obtained  property, casualty, life & health licenses and was ready to fill a vacancy as a customer service representative. Dan excelled at service and sales, learning the business from the ground floor, and in 2004 was promoted to commerical sales and  personal lines supervisor. He is a member in the Catholic Business Network of  Prince Georges County.

Dan is an avid swimmer and also enjoys hunting & fishing and trips to his West Virginia cabin. He  lives in Silver Spring and spends as much time as possible with his teenaged daughter, Paige.  

Jo Ann was born in Syracuse, NY. and spent much of her childhood in Rochester before her family moved south and settled in Olney, Md., where she attended St. Peter's before graduating from the Academy of Holy Cross in Kensington, Md. 

A true anomaly in this age of job hopping, Jo Ann began her insurance career at Geico and for the next 28 years she worked as a customer service representative, sales manager and underwriter before Geico relocated to Fredericksburg, Va. After 3 years with the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF) and 1 year each at USAA and the Federal Emergency Management Assocaition (FEMA), we had the opportunity to hire Jo Ann in December 2003. (Don't tell Geico but she happened to be  one of our lontime customers!)  Her 35 years of experience and ability to share that knowledge with everyone on our team, has already made her a tremendous value to our clients and our firm.  

Jo Ann is a licensed Property & Casualty professional. She belongs to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Beltsville and enjoys traveling and sports, especially the Washington Redskins. Jo Ann now resides in Jessup, Md.

Scott joined J.W. McCartin in 2002 as a customer service representative in the Personal Lines Department. Coupled with his commercial insurance background, Scott offers a broad range of insurance  knowledge, as well as being a part time  computer programmer, specializing in Basic, Visual Basic & HTML.   

Scott lives with his wife in College park, MD and spends his spare time as an amateur weather forecaster and stormchaser. He also enjoys composing Gospel Hymns for his church.

After graduating from Bowie High School in 1991, Buddy immediately entered the insurance world, working & learning the business from bottom to top at  the H.T. Clark Agency in Greenbelt, Md.  He had the very fortunate opportunity to learn from an acutely skilled and highly successfull insurance advisor, his father, Buddy Clark III. During the next 14 years, Buddy and staff helped his father grow their Erie agency into a perennial award winner and a top agency with  Erie Insurance Group. When Buddy 'Senior' decided to retire and offered J.W. McCartin  the opportunity  to purchase his agency, they jumped at the chance. With 'Junior' spearheading  a near seamless transition of our new clients, his product knowledge and professionalism became obvious and had an immediate impact. Buddy's experience & enthusiasm is a valuable resource for our clients and prospects looking for guidance in their  auto, home & life insurance needs.  

 Buddy now resides in Beltsville, Md. but spent most of his childhood in Champaign, Illinois and is a huge fan of  Illini football & basketball. He enjoys refurbishing historic cars and his hobbies also include bowling, country music and traveling.       

Jane joined our agency in September, 2005 as an "Account Executive" in our Commercial Lines department. She is licensed in Property and Casualty insurance and holds a "Certificate in General Insurance" and an "Associate in Commercial Lines Underwriting." Jane has completed five of the eight required courses toward the Certified Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. She brings a great deal of insurance experience to our agency and we are very happy she is a member of our team.

Jane lives with her husband in Laurel, Md. She enjoys gardening, traveling, and taking long walks. She is an avid animal lover, especially dogs, cats and horses.
